First ever international badminton event to be organised in the Faroe Islands

From 2 to 4 February 2022, Badminton Europe (BEC) visited the Faroese Badminton Association (BSF) as part of a Representative Visit under the BEC BASIS Programme.

The main topic of the Representative Visit was the organisation of events, as the Faroese Badminton Association is planning to host their first ever international badminton event. The Faroe Games Junior International 2022 (Junior International Series) will take place from 1 to 3 July 2022 in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands.

Matthieu Hecker, Events Officer at BEC, shared his knowledge around the organisation of international badminton tournaments with Peter Chr. Gram, BSF’s General Secretary, and the various stakeholders who will be involved with the organisation of the Faroe Games Junior International 2022. The various topics discussed during the visit were the requirements for the venue setup of an international badminton tournament, how to prepare and deliver such tournament, and sharing best practices.

- We have realised that in order to attract foreign players to the Faroe Islands, it is not enough to offer an exotic tournament on a group of very beautiful islands. It needs to be both affordable and count as part of the BWF and BEC Rankings, Gram stated.

Looking forward to the Faroe Games Junior International 2022
The Junior International Series tournament, planned this summer in the Faroese capital, will be a part of the Faroe Games 2022. It will be the second edition of this multi-sport event which is hosted by the Faroese Confederation of Sports and the Faroese Olympic Committee. This bi-annual event will be held every even year in the Faroe Islands and around 20 sports will be represented in 2022, with each sport association choosing the format of their event.

For the Faroe Games 2022, one part of the badminton competition will be a Junior International Series tournaments, meaning that players born 2004 or later from all around the world are expected to participate to gain ranking points for the BWF Junior Rankings, the BEC Junior Circuit Ranking, and the BEC European U17 Ranking.

The invitation for the tournament will be released by 23 March 2022, but the local organisers are already working hard to provide all participants with a cost-friendly trip to the Faroe Islands. It is expected that the full board accommodation in dormitory (room + 3 meals) will be available for less than 50€ per person per day.

- We are very grateful for the helpfulness and flexibility that BEC has shown in getting this tournament up and running on a relatively short notice, Gram said.

41 years of hard work
Today is an extra special day for the Faroese Badminton Association. We are not talking about Valentine’s Day, but their birthday. This year, it is their 41st anniversary. Badminton Europe would like to with them a happy birthday.

From the special moments that await in the future, such as the Faroe Games Junior International 2022, to memorable milestones, such as their debut appearance at the 2020 European Junior Team Championships, BSF can be proud of their bright trajectory.

- For a country as small as the Faroe Islands, it is not a natural thing for us to be able to afford professional help in the day-to-day administration. But now it is a reality, and we have now come to the point that we are looking forward to increased collaboration with various external stakeholders, especially Badminton Europe and BWF, Gram explained a year ago.
